Basic information

The department focuses on the environmental, social and economic sustainability of civil and civil engineering structures throughout their life cycle.

Pedagogical activity

The department provides teaching of subjects focused on the study of the interaction relationships between buildings and the environment in order to restore the ecological stability of the environment, measures to promote biodiversity, design of water structures, environmental risk assessment, assessment of the impact of activities and buildings on the environment and life cycle assessment of building materials and buildings and the urban environment, assessment of the sustainability of buildings by certification systems. He is involved in education across all study programmes of the Faculty of Civil Engineering TUKE in bachelor and engineering degree studies. It is a training center for doctoral studies in the study programme Theory of Technology and Management in Construction and Theory of Building Design and Environment.

Scientific research activity

The research activities of the department are focused on global environmental issues with the aim of mitigating climate change, analysis and design of water conservation measures and low-carbon technologies, life cycle analysis of construction products and buildings, and monitoring the quality of the indoor environment of buildings. The department is involved in research and development on the implementation of green and blue infrastructure measures in urbanized areas.

Offer of services and activities for practice

In cooperation with the construction practice, the department focuses on:

  • Design activities: watercourse treatment, design of domestic wastewater treatment plants, design of landfills
  • Laboratory activities: measurement of indoor environmental quality factors, physical and chemical analyses - air, water, soil
  • Analyses, assessments, audits: environmental impact assessment of activities, environmental risk assessment, environmental impact assessment during the life cycle of buildings, environmental product declaration, assessment of climate risks and vulnerability to climate change in the sense of the EU Taxonomy, quantification of the carbon footprint of products
  • Lifelong learning as required
