Basic information

The Department of Load Bearing Structures and Intelligent Adaptive Structures was created in 2022 by merging the Department of Metal and Timber Structures and the Department of Concrete and Masonry Structures.

 

Pedagogical activity

The department participates in education in all study programmes of the Faculty of Civil Engineering TUKE in the field of metal, wooden, concrete, masonry, and interconnected structures and bridges. The department is a training center for doctoral studies in the study programme Theory and Design of Civil Engineering Structures.

 

Scientific research activity

The department has a long tradition and is involved in national and international scientific research projects in basic and applied research. The department is oriented towards solving scientific problems of statics, dynamics, optimal design and dimensioning of building structures and develops adaptive load-bearing systems. These activities are also carried out by solving actual problems for practice.

 

Offer of services and activities for practice

The department focuses on metal, timber, concrete, masonry interlocking and composite load bearing structures and provides:

  • Static and dynamic calculations and analysis of structures (in Abaqus, Ansys, Scia Engineer, Dlubal, IDEA StatiCa, Midas, Geo5, Matlab and Atena)
  • Design of new load-bearing structures of buildings and bridges
  • Design of reconstruction and rehabilitation of building and bridge structures
  • Expert assessment of existing building and bridge structures
  • Diagnosis and monitoring of load-bearing structures of buildings and bridges
  • Carrying out static load and dynamic tests of bridges
  • Experimental diagnostics of dynamic characteristics of structures
  • Static and dynamic tests of elements and parts of load-bearing structures
  • Destructive and non-destructive testing of concrete and masonry, determining the position and diameter of reinforcing bars and the thickness of the cover layer
  • Testing of building materials exposed to elevated temperatures and frost
  • Determination of the load capacity and residual life of bridges and crane runways
  • Expert assessment of diagnosis and rehabilitation design prepared by another organisation
  • Expert assistance in the performance of bridge inspections
  • Expert advice and consultation in the field of load-bearing structures
  • Expertise in the field of Civil Engineering, sector of Structural Engineering
  • Training and courses focused on selected theoretical, technical and technological problems of structures
